BOTOX® for Teeth Grinding & Clenching

Teeth grinding or clenching is common and is often associated with moments of stress or concentration. However, grinding that occurs when you aren’t eating may be due to a condition called bruxism. Over time, all the clenching and grinding can wear down and eventually crack teeth.

Unfortunately, cracked teeth can develop root canal disease, often requiring root canal treatment or even extraction. It is not uncommon to also experience painful symptoms that go beyond their teeth, such as frequent headaches, migraines, jaw stiffness, and facial pain.

At Endodontic Excellence, we provide relief for muscle soreness and pain with BOTOX for teeth grinding and clenching. Because it helps minimize pressure on your teeth, BOTOX can also help prevent excessive tooth wear and breakage.

How Does BOTOX® Help Teeth Grinding and Clenching?

You are probably familiar with BOTOX, an aesthetic facial treatment used to temporarily treat wrinkles caused by facial expressions like smiling. At Endodontic Excellence, we use BOTOX Therapeutic, an FDA-approved protein complex to control nerve impulses that cause muscle contraction.

Because bruxism is caused by a contraction in the jaw muscles, BOTOX therapy calms these contractions, significantly reducing unconscious grinding or clenching of your teeth.

The traditional treatment typically used by dentists to treat bruxism is a customized nightguard that prevents upper and lower teeth from meeting during sleep. Other treatment protocols might include stress management, physical therapy, and medications.

BOTOX for grinding and clenching can be used as part of these therapies or as a standalone treatment.

What's Involved with BOTOX for Teeth Grinding?

When planning BOTOX treatment for bruxism, Dr. Alan Lee will perform an evaluation to determine the muscle and bone structure of your jaw. This will tell him where to place the injections and how many units of BOTOX you will require.

Administering the BOTOX injections takes less than five minutes. Our endodontist, Dr. Alan Lee, applies a topical anesthetic to numb the areas where he’s placing BOTOX. He then administers the injection into those muscles with a thin needle designed specifically for pain-free BOTOX injection.

What Results Can I Expect with BOTOX for Teeth Grinding?

Because it takes anywhere from five days to two weeks to see the full effects, Dr. Alan Lee typically starts your therapy with a conservative dose. Then, in two weeks, he’ll reevaluate the results to determine if additional BOTOX is needed.

Controlled jaw muscles strength through BOTOX therapy minimizes their overuse while still allowing you to chew properly.

The results achieved typically last for about 3-6 months, and as you receive subsequent maintenance treatments, the amount and frequency of BOTOX needed will decrease gradually.
