Laser-assisted root canal treatment | Dentist in Reston VA

Fotona LightWalker® Laser

When performing a traditional root canal treatment, a dentist or endodontist uses a dental drill to access the inside of the tooth and remove the inflamed or infected dental pulp using a sequence of file instruments. Then the canal is enlarged, and a syringe is used to deliver the disinfecting solution to clear out and fill the canal.

While these conventional root canal methods can be effective, there are major shortcomings as every tooth has unique and complex root canal systems, and the traditional instruments used may not be able to thoroughly disinfect the affected area. This results in increased level and duration of postoperative pain and sometimes even persistent infection leading to treatment failure.

At Endodontic Excellence, we strive to provide you with the best possible care—and don’t want you to settle for “good enough.” We vigorously researched and tested various technologies and treatment methods to overcome such disadvantages of the traditional root canal treatment and brought in the state-of-the-art dual-wavelength laser system, namely LightWalker® by Fotona.

When the laser is activated inside a tooth that has been filled with the disinfecting solution, light energy creates non-thermal photoacoustic shockwaves, treating the areas where a conventional file and syringe cannot reach, resulting in a much cleaner root canal, successful treatment, and more comfort post-procedure.

Moreover, we treat our patients with “laser massage” (laser photobiomodulation therapy, also called low-level laser therapy) before the procedure, which further accelerates the healing and reduces any soreness from the jaw or the tooth after the root canal treatment.

Are you afraid of drill sounds? The laser can substitute the drill and create access to the pulp without noise, heat, or vibration of a drill.

With this technology, we’re excited to offer the next-level endodontics to you!

Pain-Free Dental Injections

The fear and anxiety induced by the thought of dental injections are enough to make many patients risk their oral health and forego treatment altogether. At Endodontic Excellence, we want to ensure that every step of your endodontic care is personalized to meet your needs, with the highest level of comfort possible.

We are pleased to offer two modern technologies that make the process of getting numb in the dental chair seamless and stress-free:

  • EdgePharma Profound Gel: We’ve invested in specially made topical anesthetics that will enhance pain-free anesthetics. After vigorous research and numerous trials, Dr. Alan Lee has found this gel to be most effective in numbing the injection site before injection.
  • Septodont Dentapen®: A computerized anesthetic system for controlled and pain-free anesthetic injection
  • Bing Innovations DentalVibe®: A dental device that emits a light vibration to manipulate and block pain signals to the brain. A pain-free injection device that blocks pain sensations by emitting slight vibrations.
  • TuttleNumbNow (TTN) Injection Technique: Dr. Alan Lee has mastered the TTN technique, developed by Dr. Gregory Tuttle, which ensures profound numbing of the most stubborn hot teeth, all pain-free.

When a caring mind meets experience, techniques, and technologies, the result is your comfortable and stress-free root canal experience.

Morita Veraview® X-800 3-D Cone Beam CT

Because traditional x-rays give only two-dimensional views of three-dimensional structures, often, the acquired images are not able to depict an in-depth, comprehensive view of your mouth structure.

Cone beam computer tomography (CBCT), scans a selected area of your mouth to produce a highly detailed 3-D imaging that shows bone, soft tissues, nerve pathways, and teeth in a single volume.

Dr. Alan Lee uses this high-tech 3D scanning to perform a detailed evaluation of teeth, jaws, sinuses, and nerve pathways for accurate diagnoses and safe treatment planning.

Taking CBCT scans is easy, non-invasive, and produces highly accurate results, all with negligible exposure to radiation.

Zeiss Extaro® 300 Surgical Microscope

In modern endodontics, a surgical microscope has become an indispensable tool for an endodontist. With illumination and up to 25x magnification of minute structures of a tooth, such as root canals, it facilitates the overall treatment process.

Extaro® 300 is the newest surgical microscope made by Zeiss, the world’s most renowned optics company. This leading-edge microscope combines crisp high magnification and augmented visualization which allows Dr. Alan Lee to safely perform the toughest root canals and complex microsurgeries in a precise manner.

Further, Dr. Alan Lee can even project the live or recorded view of the procedure onto a large screen, which can be watched by patients, their family members, and referring dentists, for an additional layer of documentation and peace of mind.
